For the French artist’s first solo exhibition stateside, he transforms the gallery into an otherworldly environment awash with magic-infused purples. Inside are large-scale portraits on canvas and wearable garments that illuminate disparities in the French Caribbean’s visual and cultural history, which is rooted in African ancestry. Each work blends elements of classical painting and fragments of contemporary culture to reinvent the “hero” archetype as an assemblage of forces, distancing viewers from their own conventional perceptions.
