Following a 2019 takeover of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s facade, Wangechi Mutu brings her chimerical sculptures of powerful female characters and hybrid beings to San Francisco’s Legion of Honor. It’s a symbolic gesture—the museum showcases European art from antiquity through Impressionism and features a neoclassical courtyard presided over by Auguste Rodin’s The Thinker. Disrupting its isolation are two of the Afrofuturist artist’s bronze Shavasana figures, limp blanketed bodies with polished nails and bright stilettos that question and reframe the historical context of his creation through the lens of colonial violence. This tension continues inside, where Mutu introduces sculptures of hybrid animal, woman, and alien goddesses fashioned out of soil, trees, ash, animals, and gems indigenous to her home country of Kenya.
