Shifting the conversation from African-inspired works to designers rooted in African heritage, Sotheby’s launches a first-of-its-kind exhibition that spotlights 21 Black designers. Curated by journalist and author Melanie Grant, “Brilliant and Black” pays homage to African artistry through a medley of roughly 60 contemporary and ornate jewelry pieces that borrow materials from their conceptual homeland. The shifted spotlight subverts the traditional power dynamics within the jewelry industry as it presses on diversity and brings Black designers further into the luxury flurry associated with haute joaillerie.
