In 2001, R & Company became the first U.S. gallery to present Verner Panton’s work—marked by unapologetic use of brilliant color, experimentation with light and form, and engagement with mass production—in an immersive environment as he originally conceived. On the 20th anniversary of that exhibition, the gallery again recreates the pioneering Danish designer’s whimsical world through a selection of rare and recognizable lamps, textiles, chairs, and furniture collected over the past three years. The show will focus on Panton’s distinct approach to lighting, particularly his belief that bulbs should be obscured to emphasize form, material, and emanating light. They’ll be presented within an environment of textiles and carpets, his breakthrough stackable “S” chair, and a rare sofa he made for Thonet.
