DESIGNER OF THE DAY

Designer of the Day: Kim Mesches

A rapidly rising fashion designer known for his line of “graphic-chic” zero-waste athleisure, Kim Mesches is also gaining steam for his fluid cast resin sculptures that appear frozen in time. Each can be transformed into wall-mounted lighting fixtures that cast ethereal glows or worn as dramatic statement dresses that have even attracted the likes of Normani and Cardi B, proving his range and promise.

Here, we ask designers to take a selfie and give us an inside look at their life.

Hometown: New York.

Studio location: Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Describe what you make: Resin cast sculptures.

The most important thing you’ve designed to date: I created a fish scale resin cast that was used for Cardi B and Normani’s album cover.

Describe the problem your work solves: My pieces can be mounted on walls and lit from the inside providing a beautiful yet eerie experience for the viewer.

Describe the project you are working on now: I recently debuted an art show on October 14, so there are new pieces for that. I’m displaying around 20 pieces. I’m also working on custom pieces for upcoming appearances on red carpets and in magazine editorials.

A new or forthcoming project we should know about: My debut solo gallery show called Specter, which opened on October 14.

What you absolutely must have in your studio: Constant music, all types of paint, dye, resin, fabrics, my gas mask, and gloves.

What you do when you’re not working: I like to see new art exhibitions, sketch, socialize, exercise, try new restaurants, and get new inspiration. Ideas for new pieces come randomly. I always want to push myself to find new techniques and learn.

Sources of creative envy: Alexander McQueen, Iris Van Herpen, Richard Serra, Lev Khesin, Daniel Arsham.

The distraction you want to eliminate: I would love to eliminate my phone. I’m trying to break the habit of feeling the need to constantly check it.

Concrete or marble? Concrete.

High-rise or townhouse? High-rise.

Remember or forget? Remember.
