Here, we ask designers to take a selfie and give us an inside look at their life.
Age: 31
Occupation: Designer.
Instagram: @jamiewolfond
Hometown: Toronto.
Studio location: Toronto.
Describe what you make: Things. I start the design process with an abstract experiment and eventually (when I’m lucky) can apply it to something concrete. It’s tough to plan whether the result is going to be a basket or a table or a sculpture, but I can always count on it being a thing.
The most important thing you’ve designed to date: Halloween pumpkins 2020.
Describe the problem your work solves: Like all art, it’s a set of tools for understanding our environment.
Describe the project you are working on now: Designing and setting up a new studio. It’s an amazing project. The first things I ever made were shelves for my childhood bedroom and this buildout evokes the same freedom and immediacy.
A new or forthcoming project we should know about: I recently launched my first ever solo exhibition at Matter Projects. It’s called “Flash Set,” and consists of more than 100 cast, carved, and painted gypsum sculptures. It’s open at 405 Broome Street in New York through Sept. 9.
What you absolutely must have in your studio: Sparkling water.
What you do when you’re not working: Family, biking, boxing, climbing.
Sources of creative envy: Tauba Auerbach, Enzo Mari, Olafur Eliasson.
The distraction you want to eliminate: At this exact second, the great British Baking Show. (Ok, I’ve turned it off.)
Concrete or marble? Concrete.
High-rise or townhouse? Townhouse.
Remember or forget? Remember.
