Through his mixed media, site-specific installations, artist Shimon Attie finds the convergence of place, memory and identity. The recipient of a Guggenheim fellowship, Attie’s work has been displayed at MoMA, the Louvre, and, as of today, Lehigh University’s Luag Main Gallery, where he looks at the past lives of the city Lehigh calls home: Bethlehem, PA. Attie uses video and sculpture to examine each layer of Bethlehem’s history, from its colonization by the Moravian Church and its position at the heart of the rise and fall of the American steel industry to the Wind Creek casino and resort that now operates on the former Bethlehem Steel Grounds. In Attie’s purview, the city is a microcosm of America.
