Jaipur Living Combines Artisan Handicraft With Fine Fibers

The rug brand makes the case for recasting cashmere, wool, and silk from the cornerstones of a luxe winter wardrobe to textiles with which to splendidly outfit one's own home.

Silk, alpaca, Mongolian cashmere, and New Zealand wool are perhaps best known as cornerstones of a luxuriant winter wardrobe. But with the recently launched Fine Fibers collection, Jaipur Living is making the case for splendidly outfitting the home, too. As the market’s biggest purveyor of handmade rugs, the brand relies on a network of 40,000 women artisan makers in India—from the nine weavers of the brand’s nascence in 1978.

Each of the 20 styles in the Fine Fibers collection, which ranges from the plush cashmere and wool offerings to lower-pile silk and nettle blends, is made to order, offering the extravagance of individual intention behind each commission. A palette of ivory, ecru, sienna, sand, and charcoal allows the integrity of craft behind each rug to speak for itself. “The simplicity makes it timeless,” says the brand’s vice president of creative, Lance Trachier. “There’s a certain hard-to-place tightrope walk that is necessary to be relevant, and to express a nostalgia that honors a centuries-old craft.”

With no need for stunting or antics, the collection seems to draw a parallel to the investment pieces at the foundation of a great wardrobe rotation, with ample integrity of craft to suit those as discerning about outfitting their homes as they are their bodies. Of course, not even the most devoted fashionphile can build a home around a beloved vintage blazer or absolutely killer miniskirt. But looking forward to a lifetime of tomorrows padding around on a plush cashmere rug? Even Trachier finds that hard to capture in words alone. “They’re beautiful and photogenic and a treat to the eyes, [but] it’s that enveloping comfort that makes them unforgettable,” he says.
