DESIGNER OF THE DAY

Designer of the Day: Jakob Sprenger

Jakob Sprenger launched his interiors firm while still a university student and quickly became enamored by his proximity to some of Europe’s leading artisans and material masters. His enthusiasm and expertise at creating highly textural environments attracted Australian skincare brand Aesop, which has tapped him to envision outposts in Rome, Florence, New York City, and Paris, all united by their tranquil moods and use of one-of-a-kind objects that effortlessly forge a “Gesamtkunstwerk” effect.

The most important thing you’ve designed to date: Aesop Via del Corso Rome and Aesop Wall Street New York.

Describe the problem your work solves: We tackle the challenge of designing aesthetically refined and deeply purposeful spaces. We offer bespoke solutions in architecture, interior design, and product design, focusing on integrating natural, expertly crafted materials. Our approach goes beyond mere appearance. We aim to create unique spaces of atmospheric quality and long-lasting values tailored to our clients’ needs.

Describe the project you are working on now: A luxury hospitality project in the Swiss Alps and on a private chalet in Verbier.

A new or forthcoming project we should know about: We will complete an exciting hospitality project in the Swiss Alps before the end of this year!

What you absolutely must have in your studio: My everyday essentials are chilled green tea, no music, and my cat sleeping somewhere in the studio.

What you do when you’re not working: I love to work, so there’s hardly a day I won’t be doing something. But when I’m out of the office, you’ll most likely find me by the sea or traveling and exploring the world.

Sources of creative envy: Charlotte Perriand, Francesco Borromini, Eduardo Chillida, Pierre Culot, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Hans Josephsohn… this list could continue for a very long time.

The distraction you want to eliminate: Phones. It really annoys me to be expected to answer calls all the time.

Concrete or marble? Both! Concrete has a great value and tradition over here in Switzerland—there are some excellent béton-brut buildings. However, I love to work with contrasts and natural materials, so we use a lot of marble in our projects too. Visiting stone quarries to find the right block is one of the most exciting things!

High-rise or townhouse? Townhouse. I prefer a more domestic scale over imposing structures.

Remember or forget? I usually don’t forget, so I’d say remember.

Aliens or ghosts? Neither.

Dark or light? Dark. I’m a night owl.
