California’s Gavin Newsom signs a bill making brands responsible for textile recycling.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a law requiring fashion brands with more than $1 million in global revenue to create and fund recycling programs for old clothes sold in the state. This legislation addresses the increasing concern over textile waste, as California discarded 1.2 million tons of textiles in 2021, with only 15 percent of that among having been recycled. The new law mirrors responsibility programs in Europe, marking the first of its kind in the United States.
