Go Inside Issey Miyake’s New Milan Flagship

A restored 19th-century mansion is a curious setting for an unabashedly inventive garment collection. But this juxtaposition is what Issey Miyake was after for its flagship boutique in Italy, which opened its doors this spring in Milan’s Quadrilatero district. The Japanese fashion brand joined forces with award-winning designer Tokujin Yoshioka—who collaborated on the brand’s Brook Street outpost in London, among other projects—to mastermind a Milanese home for its futuristic threads. The result is anything but dissonant: brightly hued aluminum panels sidle up to faded frescoes, and a kaleidoscopic rack of uncreasable separates pops against creamy stucco walls. “I’m drawn to Mr. Miyake because his designs are infinite and free,” says Yoshioka. “Contrasting different elements in this historical palazzo creates a unique aesthetic to express the passage of time.”
