Haus Alkire Preserves Nature’s Beauty With a Print Made of Pressed Flowers

Fashion designers often stylize flowers, obscuring their organic form. Jason and Julie Alkire, founders of New York–based womenswear label Haus Alkire, break from that norm, opting to celebrate nature’s meticulously designed plants with a print developed on a trip to Verbier, Switzerland. While hiking through the Alps around the ski village last summer, the husband-and-wife team fell for wild globeflowers, common spotted orchids, and Alpine asters. After picking the blossoms, the Alkires pressed them between white card stock in a heavy art book found in their hotel room. The nearby Flore-Alpe Botanical Garden allowed the pair to photograph native edelweiss growing on its grounds. Together, the photos capture the beauty of a flower’s lifespan in their final form: a digital print immortalized on ethereal silk fabric.
