The LEED design experts at Archi-Tectonics have a penchant for sustainable projects with dramatic facades. (Look to its New York residences at the Brewster Building, 33 Vestry, and 497 Greenwich Street for examples.) Archi-Tectonics is helmed by Winka Dubbeldam, a Dutch-American architect who established the research-based firm in 1994 after receiving her second Masters degree from Columbia University and Partner Justin Korhammer who joined Archi-Tectonics in 2016.

Located west of Soho in Manhattan, we added an extension to a 1900’s townhouse, and wrapped the entirety of the structure in a unifying, rectangular trellis envelope of multiple patterns and densities.Made from a lightweight steel frame and folding panels clad with Trespa™ slats, this “smart climate control envelope” serves as an adaptable perimeter of the building.

Its surface is much larger than the building structure itself; it creates and wraps private exterior spaces all around the building facade and on the roof. Vines grow through the trellis, further shading and creating variable levels of privacy, and a micro-climate for this 1 family, 8 story townhouse. Extensive prototyping assisted us in optimizing the patterning and movement of the trellis panels.

The facade transforms as the panels open: when closed it forms one smooth surface, when open “finger-like” fins fold out like feathers of a birdwing.
2022 ASIAN GAME PARK&STADIUMS
As winners of this Invited Competition for the Asian Games 2022, we were asked to design a mile-long park with two stadiums, a commercial mall, a fitness building, a visitors center, and three parking garages.

ASIAN GAME TABLE TENNIS STADIUM
The main Table Tennis Stadium Design is based on the Body within Body concept. A mysterious traditional object: the Cong, was an inspiration for the concept of intersection of the Stadium's building volumes.
2022 ASIAN GAME FIELD HOCKEY STADIUM
For the Field Hockey Stadium, we studied the bamboo frame of the Meinong oil-paper umbrella. Its high strength and elegant structure inspired the design of the 125m free-span tensile roof structure that extends over the stadium creating shading for both players and visitors.
