DESIGNER OF THE DAY

Designer of the Day: Michael Felix

Michael Felix’s range of thoughtfully designed furnishings overflows with the familial wisdom and tradition he accrued as a third-generation upholsterer. The California native’s latest launch, the gravity-defying Gaspar Table, propels his practice into the avant-garde—it’s easily one of the most notable pieces on view at the Los Angeles Design Festival.

Here, we ask designers to take a selfie and give us an inside look at their life.

Age: 40

Occupation: Designer

Instagram: @michaelfelix

Hometown: Newport Beach, CA.

Studio location: Los Angeles.

Describe what you make: I design seating and have expanded the collection with a couple different tables.

Gaspar Table

The most important thing you’ve designed to date: I’m really happy with the Gaspar Table and I’m working on expanding the collection around it. The Madda Chair is probably the most popular.

Describe the problem your work solves: First and foremost, my employment. But also I think that people want to enjoy unique objects or a design within a story. It makes spaces more enjoyable and I feel like my work attempts to solve those desires.

Describe the project you are working on now: I’m working on a few new chairs. I’d like to develop types of seating for every situation.

A new or forthcoming project we should know about: Definitely thinking about showing at the AD Design Show in March, and possibly ICFF in May.

What you absolutely must have in your studio: Endless playlists. Topo Chico. Friends in adjacent studios.

What you do when you’re not working: I play music with my band Massage, basketball at the Y, read the New Yorker, and general laziness. Hopefully traveling.

Sources of creative envy: Apartamento magazine, Mitch Hedburg, Frank Ocean, Mexico.

The distraction you want to eliminate: All the screens in my life.
