Describe what you make: Professionally, I produce commissioned environments in homes, hotels, restaurants, and workspaces. I enjoy furniture and craft and often design objects for the spaces I’m working on. I love materials and mixing different time periods, cultures, and sensibilities into a narrative. I draw and collage and am constantly creating and refining our design process. I also make cakes.
The most important thing you’ve designed to date: Projects are important for different reasons. Some projects have helped me grow my team or have connected me to lifelong clients and communities. I met my long-term boyfriend while doing his office! The first project I took on was a restaurant in San Francisco that I jumped into with little experience. Without that opportunity, I may have ended up in a different career.
Describe the problem your work solves: Every project comes with its own set of challenges we resolve through our consulting. Some common solutions we provide are improved sound insulation, more privacy, less clutter, and thoughtful spaces that encourage connection with the people we love.
Describe the project you are working on now: I’m working on a lot of residential projects right now, including my own house. I’m enjoying working with a more personal touch and I’m trying to incorporate my own hand in murals and custom paint work. It’s a nice change to pick up brushes again after years of being so digital.
A new or forthcoming project we should know about: We recently completed an Airstream hotel in Yosemite that we’re really proud of. Autocamp is a great place to stay while you’re challenging yourself with epic hikes.
What you absolutely must have in your studio: Lots of books, my drawing pens, to-do lists everywhere.
What you do when you’re not working: Drawing. Reading. Grilling at parties. Attending music shows. Loving California. Dreaming of dogs.
Sources of creative envy: I typically get super into one designer/architect/artist while developing project concepts and then I’m connected to their work for years. Women architects are always worth reading about for my personal growth. Charlotte Perriand is a favorite for her long and diverse career and her personal interests and influences.
The distraction you want to eliminate: My own self-doubt.
