DESIGNER OF THE DAY

Designer of the Day: Adam Pogue

Following an early career in apparel design, Adam Pogue has perfected the delicate art of textile patchwork, having crafted his own distinct language that balances whimsical appliqués with restrained touches. The Los Angeles textile artist, who is represented by Commune, weaves vibrant upholstery patterns, curtains, and pillows—all inspired by Korean pojagi and other worldly quilting techniques—that feel at once cutting-edge and soothingly familiar.

The most important thing you’ve designed to date: Roman Alonso from Commune Design asked if I could make “stained glass curtains” for his new place. With Korean bojagi as inspiration, I made three panels. It was my first commission and the start of my relationship with Commune.

Describe the problem your work solves: Quilts are an heirloom craft. Most cultures have a version of it. Hopefully I’m making work that respects this ideal and can live very long lives.

Describe the project you are working on now: I’m currently making curtain panels for an artist residency in Berlin.

A new or forthcoming project we should know about: Curtains are in the works for the forthcoming Ace Hotel in Kyoto.

What you absolutely must have in your studio: Lots of natural light, a cross breeze, and podcasts.

What you do when you’re not working: Not a lot of not working going on, but it’s always nice to hang with friends on porches.

Sources of creative envy: Gee’s Bend Quilters, Sheila Hicks, Frank Stella, Oscar Niemeyer, the Bauhaus….

The distraction you want to eliminate: Games on my phone!
