Good hotels can also double as canvases for creative expression, as this year’s finalists for the Surface Travel Awards prove. What you’ll find on this list: an architect’s pared-down variation on the classic motor lodge, this time hinged on clean, raw woods; a retro rehab, inspired by Wong Kar-Wai arthouse films, that channels themes of activism and resistance; a madcap exoskeleton facade by the late Zaha Hadid; a geodesic dome with Scandinavian accents; an artistic refitting of Jean Prouvé’s prefabricated hideaway for WWII refugees; and more.
