Here, we ask designers to take a selfie and give us an inside look at their life.
Age: b. 1981
Occupation: Co-founder and lead designer at Aeron.
Instagram: @aeronstudio and @aroneszter.
Hometown: Budapest.
Studio location: Budapest.
Describe what you make: I am a womenswear designer.
The most important thing you’ve designed to date: My favorite part of designing a new collection is reinterpreting Aeron’s signature leather separates. I love outerwear, and always find myself gravitating toward unique sophisticated shapes. For Aeron’s Fall/Winter 2020 collection, we created an incredible khaki trench coat called the Palla.
Aside from designing, interiors are also a big passion of mine. I love vintage furniture and collect it from all over Hungary. I gravitate toward mid-century pieces in striking hues. Decorating my flat in Budapest has been a long but rewarding process. Taking the time to find pieces we value has created a home which feels true to my family and I.
Describe the problem your work solves: Although I take great pride in beauty, my work is practical and serves a function. As a mother, I increasingly value these elements in my design process. On a personal level, designing is a method to express my creativity. I value craftsmanship and durability with the intention of creating timeless pieces that will last for many years. Aeron’s atelier and the majority of our factories are based in Hungary and surrounding countries. I’m grateful that Aeron can create jobs and opportunities in Budapest while contributing to a sector I care very deeply about.
Describe the project you are working on now: I’m currently working on Aeron’s Pre-Fall 2021 collection. Each collection is designed central to the inspiration of powerful women, with a focus on one woman in particular. I feel very connected to this collection and am really enjoying the design process.
A new or forthcoming project we should know about: During the lockdown period, we launched Aeronography. A collaborative project that extends to our creative community, Aeronography is a collection of photos accompanied by meaningful conversation. Initially keeping the project local to Hungary, Aeron worked with creative Hungarian duos such as Zoltan and Nelli Tombor, as well as Fruzsi and Istvan Labady. Aligning to our recent rebranding, we began thinking on a more global scale with the intent of broadening our community. This led us to working with Karla Gruszecka, the fashion director of Vogue Poland. Set to launch in the coming months in accordance with our Resort 2021 collection that was inspired by Pina Bausch, our next installment centers around a contemporary dancer and artist based in New York City.
What you absolutely must have in your studio: I have two huge industrial-style windows in my studio that offer an abundance of natural light and fresh air. This really helps to clear my mind while working. I always have my dachshund Dragomir sitting right alongside me as well.
What you do when you’re not working: I spend time with my family and friends. I have a young daughter Roni, who always keeps me busy!
Sources of creative envy: My mother was an incredible woman who I always admired. Her sense of style and the way she carried herself is something that I seek to emulate in each collection and in my everyday life. My father was an actor, so I grew up around the theatre. This helped instill a sense of creativity in me and appreciation for the arts at a young age.
The distraction you want to eliminate: The uncertainty of these past few months. The world has shifted and it’s challenging to rationalize how and why things are happening. I’ve found it difficult sitting with the unknown.
