In order to achieve the nontraditional pleats in this jumpsuit, Issey Miyake’s womenswear designer, Yoshiyuki Miyamae, had to add another skill to his repertoire: skilled baker. As with other pieces from the Japanese label’s spring/summer 2017 collection, a heat-reactive glue was applied to the fabric in a graphic pattern before it went into an oven to rise. The brand has christened the technique Baked Stretch, but you can think of it as making sartorial bread.
