On Wednesday, Oct. 25, Surface celebrated the November Power Issue with award-winning British architect Norman Foster. The intimate dinner party of 15 guests was hosted at Gabriel Kreuther in Manhattan. Foster was joined by Surface editor-in-chief Spencer Bailey, executive editor William Hanley and Surface Media CEO Marc Lotenberg. Other notable guests included Lady Foster, Florent Aymeric Dubiez, Marc Gubberman, Ben Dobbin, Oscar Boyson, Jim Barnes, and Richard Dilworth.
The dinner honored Foster’s cover feature and commenced with a toast from Hanley. “I want to start with a phrase from Buckminster Fuller that [Foster and I] spoke about during our interview,” he began. “Fuller said, ‘You can’t change things by trying to fight an existing reality—you change things by developing new models that make the old ones obsolete.’ Norman, you’ve done that throughout your career—working on everything from large projects like towers and master plans, down to the handrails at City Hall in London. I hope we’ve captured the spirit of that with our cover story in the November issue of Surface.” Read the feature on Norman Foster here.
