“It has never been about drag,” says Lyle Reimer. “It’s more about creating a facial sculpture. In essence, it’s not just about the makeup.” The Vancouver-based makeup artist, whose upcoming projects include a children’s book and a collaboration with a beverage company, tells stories using trash, pigments, and words. In his work, personalities come to life through cosmetics, but what really adds to Reimer’s facial sculptures are the accessories he mixes in. From costume jewelry and lighting hardware, to raisin boxes and calculators, 98 percent of his work utilizes garbage or recycled materials people gift him, he says. “People will literally contact me, ask for my shipping address, and mail me a box of the most random shit.” Using himself as a canvas, he admits even his mother still points to a photo and asks him to identify the model: “Mom, they’re all me. Relax.”
