Event Recap: Intersection Chicago with Samsung and Soho House

Experts from across the country shed light on the inflection points where technology and design are meeting to change the world.

On July 8, Surface collaborated with Soho House for the second installment of Intersection, a creative summit series in partnership with Samsung. The day-long event consisted of talks and workshops and brought together some of the nation’s top talent to explore the numerous connections between the technology and design industries today.

Surface editor-in-chief Spencer Bailey kicked things off by moderating the keynote talk and a panel entitled “Rethinking the Design Process.” Bailey was joined by keynote speaker Max Oglesbee (Intersection), and the two discussed reimagining human interactions, connectivity, and social impact in our increasingly technology-driven world. Later in the afternoon, the conversation turned to the rapidly changing landscape of tools available to designers and how they reshape process in addition to products, with Scott Wilson (MNML), Dean DiSimone (OTHR), Jesse Harrington Au (Autodesk), and Charles Adler (Kickstarter) offering their thoughts to the assembled guests.

The day concluded with a final panel moderated by Surface travel editor Nate Storey. He was joined by Brenna Berman (Department of Innovation & Technology, City of Chicago), and Max Oglesbee to discuss technology and modern urbanism. Highlights of the conversation included the reverse migration from suburbs to cities, the effect of data-collecting sensors on urban planning, the impact of public-private partnerships on digital infrastructure, and the proliferation of the Internet of Things. Or, as Storey put it: “I want to talk about robots.”
