Issey Miyake Taps the Algorithm to Counter Textile Waste

Sustainability-oriented design laboratory Synflux has partnered with A-POC Able Issey Miyake—the brand’s conceptual line that emphasizes technology and sustainability-minded innovation in its products—on TYPE-IX Synflux. The collaboration pairs Synflux’s waste reduction design system, Algorithmic Couture, with A-POC’s existing technologies to explore the application of AI on the clothing design and production processes. It debuts with Strata and Monolith: two models of a jacket born from Algorithmic Couture’s fabric-optimized pattern, and crafted from A-POC Able Issey Miyake’s proprietary TYPE-U fabric.—David Graver

From Its New Gramercy Flagship, Knoll Hones Its Focus

Occupying two floors of MillerKnoll’s historic Renaissance-revival building on Park Ave., Knoll’s newly opened flagship reflects Florence Knoll’s pioneering ethos of “total design.” Under her leadership, the brand pursued harmony across furniture, interiors, and architecture. With contributions from designers like Jonathan Olivares, Pernilla Ohrstedt, and Salem van der Swaagh, the showroom balances residential and workplace aesthetics, incorporating bold materials, primary colors, and enduring midcentury designs like the Morrison Hannah Chair, Perron Pillo Sofa, and archival classics like the MR Chair, which speaks to Knoll’s Bauhaus roots.—J.A.D

Concepted Around Community, People’s Sets The Stage for Connection

Beyond a lingering construction wall, through a carefully attended front door, People’s welcomes guests into a sequence of three distinct social spaces—a cozy, candlelit parlor yields to a sumptuous salon, which introduces an elegant art gallery set beneath an angled skylight. The vision of Emmet McDermott and Margot Hauer-King, and designed by the Brooklyn-based studio Workstead, People’s integrates an art salon concept with quarterly shows into a convivial cocktail lounge, alongside culinary contributions from Elizabeth Street Hospitality, the team behind Raf’s and Michelin-starred Musket Room. It’s a dazzling combination—if you’re able to find it. —D.G.

Inside Telfar’s New York City Flagship

On the eve of its 20th anniversary, Telfar—Telfar Clemens’ non-gendered fashion brand, which affirmed the power of representation, inclusivity and accessibility through its “luxury for everyone” ethos—celebrated the milestone with the opening of their first permanent New York City flagship store. True to the brand’s playbook of coloring outside the lines and defying easy categorization, the 20,000 square foot space, the brand’s first brick-and-mortar, melds retail with a public access television studio for Telfar TV.

A large LED screen showing this public access network greets guests upon arrival. The retail assortment beyond highlights Telfar’s ready to wear collections, and features an illuminated floor-to-ceiling “bag bar” centerpiece that showcases every cult-favorite handbag they’ve ever made.—D.G.

SEE
In Her Debut Solo Show, Lena Christakis Will Pierce Your Sense of Wonder

The painted landscapes and still-lifes warped by whimsy and symbolism within fine artist Lena Christakis’ debut solo show, “Flat Lands,” toy with depth, dimension, and perspective. A sense of wonder is pierced by a critical, reflective eye in all eight oil-on-panel pieces—many of which conjure digitally born iconography, like an origin story for the classic four-pane Microsoft Windows logo. This solo exhibition follows a range of domestic and international group shows featuring work by the New York City-based painter, as well as inclusion in December 2023’s Untitled Miami Beach, and a two-person presentation with Santa Fe’s Smoke the Moon gallery at the Future Fair New York in May 2024.—D.G.
