Architecturally Significant Buildings Are Under Threat in L.A., and Other News

While the Eames House remains out of blaze zones, other notable L.A. architecture hasn’t.

Recent fires in Los Angeles have destroyed several architecturally significant homes, erasing key pieces of the city’s design legacy. Among the losses are the 1887 Queen Anne-style Andrew McNally House, the Zane Grey Estate with its blend of Spanish and Mission Revival design, and the Brutalist Bridges House on Sunset Boulevard. Also lost were Gregory Ain’s Midcentury Modern Park Planned homes, Will Rogers’ historic ranch, and Ray Kappe’s remodeled Keeler House, highlighting the vulnerability of architectural landmarks in fire-prone areas.

After welcoming more than 225,000 visitors, M+’s I.M. Pei exhibition heads to Shanghai.

M+ in Hong Kong concluded its acclaimed exhibition “I. M. Pei: Life Is Architecture,” drawing more than 225,000 visitors before it closed on Jan.5. The retrospective’s 400-plus works exploring Pei’s career and legacy will travel to the Power Station of Art in Shanghai from April to July 2025, and Qatar Museums Gallery, Al Riwaq in Doha from Nov. 2025 to Feb. 2026. Additionally, the exhibition’s monograph received top honors at the Architecture Book of the Year Awards.

Visual Artist Rachel Zhang has won the 2025 YoungArts Jorge M. Perez Award.

Rachel Zhang, a visual artist specializing in painting and drawing, has won the 2025 YoungArts Jorge M. Pérez Award, which includes a $25,000 unrestricted monetary prize. Known for exploring existential anxieties and social roles through her figurative narrative work, Zhang draws inspiration from sources like dystopian fiction, absurdist theater, and personal histories tied to Asian American experiences. Her accolades include the Recharge New Surrealist Prize and exhibits at Saatchi Gallery and Bellefonte Museum, while this award highlights her contributions to art as a tool for community connection and cultural reflection.

Charli XCX has spoken out to ask brands to gift items to victims of the L.A. wildfires.

Charli XCX has urged fashion and beauty brands to redirect their gifting efforts toward supporting victims of the Los Angeles wildfires, which have devastated more than 37,000 acres, destroyed thousands of structures, and claimed 16 lives. She encouraged donations to relief drives, including one organized by stylist Lana Jay Lackey for displaced families. Many brands have already stepped up, with companies like Target and Walmart pledging millions in disaster relief, and others donating clothing, food, and essentials to those affected.

The Spanish Ministry of Culture has acquired the architecturally-significant Casa Gomis.

Spain’s Ministry of Culture has acquired Casa Gomis, a mid-20th-century modernist villa designed by Antonio Bonet Castellana, for $7.3 million Located near Barcelona, the house harmonizes geometric design with its natural surroundings and has hosted notable social and artistic gatherings. The ministry plans to preserve the property, transform it into a cultural center focused on the dialogue between art and nature, and incorporate it into global programming such as Barcelona’s World Capital of Architecture in 2026.
