This spring, Jonathan Anderson just wants to have fun! The designer peppered his latest collection for Loewe with whimsical pieces, from pointed-toe sneakers resembling elf shoes to a sheer candy-colored, patchwork knit dress. Although the Spanish heritage label’s nearly two centuries of history would usually have a designer toeing the line, Anderson insists on bringing unexpected details into the mix. Taking a gamble with the brand’s iconic Puzzle Bag, Anderson had playing cards and dice hand-embroidered onto velvety billiard-green suede calfskin. Subtly integrated into the card pattern, the house’s quadruple-L Anagram emblem, created by Spanish painter and set designer Vicente Vela in 1970, puts these twists in context. No matter how high the stakes, one thing is certain: With Anderson’s sense of adventure driving Loewe, playing it safe is not an option.
