When Ma Yansong founded MAD Architects, he planned to rethink the way cities and residents connect with nature. Today, his buildings stand as futuristic contours of mountain ranges and rock formations, a design philosophy he coined in his 2015 book Shanshui City. For his first line of furniture, Yansong takes this theory to another planet. His MAD Martian collection, a commission by Gallery ALL that debuted earlier this year at Design Miami in Basel, is the architect’s vision of a terrestrial landscape on Mars. The result is a six-piece collection—dining table, lounge chair, candelabra, suspension light, wall sculpture, and console table—featuring fluid curves and metallic finishes that are both earthly and extraterrestrial.
