DESIGNER OF THE DAY

Designer of the Day: Pernille Lind

Pernille Lind channels her Danish-Thai heritage—and an upbringing steeped in global exploration—into masterminding interiors whose Scandi-inspired simplicity intermingles with Asian decorative and material influences. Now based in London, her five-year-old studio lends a polished sheen to an exclusive range of solid wood furniture and all sorts of thoughtful interiors, whether imbuing a Portuguese beachfront estate with dashes of Nordic charm or bringing over-the-top bohemian flair to a charming English cottage.

Describe what you make: I design spaces for people to experience something they wouldn’t have thought of or created themselves.

The most important thing you’ve designed to date: Hotel Sanders, in Copenhagen, which I designed with my partner Richy Almond. This has evolved into an institution in my hometown.

Describe the problem your work solves: Embarking on a residential renovation or creating an exciting new hospitality experience requires the ability to define the bigger picture and design direction, and then through experience and expertise make a lot of decisions. Some clients find it overwhelming making decisions on a never-ending pool of technical and design-related topics and challenges. We take on this responsibility while assuring our clients feel part of the journey and development of their project. Our services stretch much further than just designing—we become a key consultant and expert helping our clients accomplish their aspirations.

Describe the project you are working on now: This spring, we’re completing a renovation of a detached Victorian townhouse in Highgate, London. This project has been 2.5 years in the making. Our client has given us incredible scope and trust to create a highly bespoke interior. We worked with our most admired artisans, artists, and makers, as well as sourced incredible vintage pieces for key spaces. Every part of the house from joinery to doors, architraves, and cornices has been designed and carefully selected to give this stunning home a layered interior identity. We also created classic marble stone patterns using incredible materials that were sourced especially for the project, some being quite rare. We’re also working on a luxury spa with the aim to achieve the highest credentials within LEED certification and sustainability.

A new or forthcoming project we should know about: This summer, we’ll be able to share a few completed residential projects that we’re very excited about.

What you absolutely must have in your studio: Coffee, tea, incense or scented candles, music, and lots of different styles of lighting: desk, floor, and table lamps to create a warmer and more friendly working environment. I generally dislike using the standard office lighting as it can be very harsh.

What you do when you’re not working: I put a lot of energy and effort into my work as it’s a core passion of mine and a huge part of my identity. When I do switch off, I try to do things that re-align my energy levels or connect me with other aspects of life, such as making time for close friends and family, as well as traveling to new places, preferably in nature.

Sources of creative envy: The 1930s to ‘50s saw some of the most elegant and refined designs, including Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts, and the origin of Midcentury Modernism. These eras inspire many of our projects.

The distraction you want to eliminate: Emails.
