Pioneer Works Toasts “Brand New Heavies” With a Star-Studded Benefit
On June 2, the creative cognoscenti flocked to Pioneer Works in Red Hook, Brooklyn, for the Brand New Heavies Benefit, held in support of the cultural nonprofit’s residency program. The event also celebrated “Brand New Heavies,” an immersive exhibition that brings together monumental, site-specific work by artists Abigail DeVille, Xaviera Simmons, and Rosa Johan-Uddoh curated by Racquel Chevremont and Mickalene Thomas of Deux Femmes Noires. Lush arrangements by Asmite Floral festooned the former industrial iron factory and its gardens to complement the evening’s apropos dress code of “spring maximalism.” Guests enjoyed cocktails and a DJ set by TYGAPAW, an intimate performance by Meshell Ndegeocello inside DeVille’s sculptural installation, and a meal prepared by chef Kia Damon before the evening closed with a performance by Sneaks. Heavy hitters from the creative spheres including Gabriela Hearst, Jacolby Satterwhite, Maggie Gyllenhaal, David Byrne, and Darren Aronofsky showed up to enjoy the evening’s festivities.
