Snarkitecture, the magnetic New York design studio, has carved out a niche with its clever takes on familiar objects and eminently Instagrammable installations. Founded by artist Daniel Arsham and architect Alex Mustonen (Ben Porto joined as partner in 2014), the practice has since become a global phenomenon, with partnerships ranging from Valextra and Calvin Klein to Design Miami. Snarkitecture recently celebrated its first decade with “Fun House,” an in-depth retrospective—complete with The Beach, an interactive pool chock-full of monochromatic plastic balls—at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C.
Known for Instagrammable Installations, Snarkitecture Designs Its Own Permanent Exhibition Space
The studio has unveiled plans for a venue at New York City’s massive Hudson Yards development.
By Ryan Waddoups November 30, 2018While “Fun House” chronicled Snarkitecture’s many temporary installations, the studio has announced plans to make things permanent. Next year, it will open an exhibition space at New York’s multibillion-dollar Hudson Yards development. Dubbed Snark Park, the venue will “encourage visitors to reconsider their built environment with childlike wonder,” says Arsham, with a program of installations rotating three times per year. Unique retail experiences, including a partnership with KITH Treats, will accompany each exhibition.
Snark Park adds to the star power of Hudson Yards, whose cultural lineup includes Thomas Heatherwick’s honeycombing Vessel and the world premiere of Cornucopia, a theatrical flute performance by Icelandic pop legend Björk at The Shed, a new cultural venue by Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Rockwell Group.
Stay tuned for Snark Park programming, but we guarantee it will be immersive, photogenic, and decidedly snarky.
