DESIGNER OF THE DAY

Designer of the Day: Viktor Erlandsson

Fueled by the belief that pure, straightforward design will stand the test of time, Viktor Erlandsson peels back the layers of everyday objects to reduce them to their absolute essentials. The founder of Stockholm-based Straight Design Studio recently introduced Artefacts, a collection of authentically handmade furnishings and accessories that eschew trends, let the materials shine, and carry an imperishable essence—a direct reflection of his ethos.

Here, we ask designers to take a selfie and give us an inside look at their life.

Age: 32

Occupation: Designer and creative director at Straight Design Studio.

Instagram: @straightdesignstudio

Hometown: Stockholm.

Studio location: Stockholm.

Describe what you make: Creative solutions within the field of products, creative direction, and architecture—everything from a tiny object to a big residence or a brand profile. The essence of my work exists in obvious shapes and traditional materials but with great attention to detail. Our brand is about clarity, simplicity, and sincerity. Our offering consists of product design, graphic design, interior architecture, interior coloring, creative direction, photography, concept development, and events, always with the aim to strengthen brands.

The most important thing you’ve designed to date: The Orb vase produced by Swedish producer Klong—the first of my products that was recognized by the industry and a bigger audience. This was when I first felt that I had the chance to show what I can do.

Describe the problem your work solves: We’re generally used to people giving us the right answers to a bunch of questions: what to appreciate, adore, wish for, and even consume for our own homes. We’re not even told to reflect upon why this is, though we’ve created this superfluous community built on otiose layers and the idea that everything is replaceable or existing without a purpose. My ambition is to peel these layers to find something pure and lasting underneath it all—something that’s true and meaningful.

Describe the project you are working on now: We just launched a new concept. As an addition to our brand, we’re designing and producing products under our own management. It’s a growing selection of items, designed by us without compromising or adjusting to anything, but the production. These products we call our Artefacts.

A new or forthcoming project we should know about: We don’t have a launch planned yet, but we’re currently working on a few private residences and some new products. They’re for the producers Klong and Ceannis and will be launched sometime in the beginning of 2021.

What you absolutely must have in your studio: Wine and friends.

What you do when you’re not working: Working…

Sources of creative envy: Alberto Giacometti, Karl Lagerfeld, Dieter Rams, and my great colleague Gabriel Madison.

The distraction you want to eliminate: Stupid questions, emails, and social media. All surfaces in the studio also need to be tidy.

Concrete or marble? Marble.

High-rise or townhouse? Townhouse.

Remember or forget? Remember to remember.

Aliens or ghosts? Aliens.

Dark or light? Darkness.
