“Charles Ray: Three Rooms and the Repair Annex”
Matthew Marks Gallery
522 and 526 W 22nd Street
CLOSES: June 16
Charles Ray’s glossy exhibition at the Matthew Marks Gallery sees the artist playing with shiny surfaces and metallic textures. The three sculptures in the main gallery meld the art historical past with the mechanized present, dressing subjects drawn from classical motifs and themes in a polished sheen: a reclining nude in stainless steel, a lion fighting a dog in sterling silver, and a Greco-Roman relief in aluminum. The two pieces in the gallery’s annex display the reverse process: a pair stainless steel sculptures of car mechanics painted a matte, almost marble-like white.

“Image Building: How Photography Transforms Architecture”
Parrish Art Museum
279 Montauk Highway
Water Mill, NY
CLOSES: June 17
“Image Building: How Photography Transforms Architecture” at the Parrish Art Museum in Southampton takes a diachronic approach to examining the interplay of photography and architecture. Guest curated by Therese Lichtenstein, the 57 images that comprise the exhibition span a range of subjects (the urban, the suburban, and the rural) from renowned and underappreciated photographers (Ezra Stoller, Iwan Baan, Julius Sherman, Ed Ruscha, and Stephen Shore among them), revealing our fluid and variable perceptions of these seemingly monolithic buildings and structures over time. “Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up”
Victoria and Albert Museum
Cromwell Road, Knightsbridge
London
OPENS: June 16
This exhibition illuminates the life, art, and inimitable dress of the Mexican icon through more than 200 of her personal objects, including her signature Tehuana garments, pre-Columbian jewelry, intricately painted prosthetics, and collection of ex votos, none of which will have ever been exhibited before. Displayed alongside film and portraits of the artist, they offer compelling insight into how Kahlo empowered herself with art and style.
