Here, we ask designers to take a selfie and give us an inside look at their life.
Age: 28
Occupation: Furniture designer.
Instagram: @willchoui
Hometown: Montreal.
Studio location: Montreal.
Describe what you make: I make pieces of furniture that I personally love but that, weirdly, I wouldn’t put in my own home.
The most important thing you’ve designed to date: Probably my Fluo Cabinet since it’s the piece that got the most attention so far. Not sure if it’s important though… is furniture important? I guess it is, to a certain extent.
Describe the problem your work solves: NONE! In fact, it probably creates more problems than it solves right now. Especially for me (just being honest).
Describe the project you are working on now: I’m working on a new bed design! I always wanted to make one since beds are, in my opinion, the most important pieces of furniture in a home since you spend half your life on them. Might as well make it nice, am I right?
A new or forthcoming project we should know about: I will be making my very first furniture collection. Not sure about the launch date yet, but somewhere between the end of 2020 and spring 2021, but probably 2021 since 2020 didn’t bring anything good. I don’t want to be a part of that “nothing good happened and the world crumbled” year.
What you absolutely must have in your studio: Everything in order, otherwise I can’t concentrate. I’m kind of a cleaning freak.
What you do when you’re not working: I procrastinate and then start worrying about everything. Other than that, I watch and play hockey like a typical Canadian.
Sources of creative envy: My entire family. Tommy Wiseau. Mother Nature, every single brutalist architect (even the bad ones), Simon Johns, James Turrell, Donald Judd. These last two are kind of easy answers, I know.
The distraction you want to eliminate: My stupid cat! Just kidding, I love her. Although she is definitely a distraction.
Concrete or marble? Béton brut.
High-rise or townhouse? An old townhouse that the high-rise developer couldn’t demolish because of heritage protection laws, that is not integrated into the building’s design.
Remember or forget? Ugh… I don’t know. This one is too hard for me.
Aliens or ghosts? Ghosts because they don’t exist.
Dark or light? Don’t you think the world is dark enough?
