This groundbreaking survey showcases the creatives at the heart of Africa’s thriving landscape of contemporary fashion—and explores how fashion has always been an integral part of African culture. As England’s largest-ever exhibition on the topic, more than 250 works of clothing, photography, sketches, films, and runway footage are brought together to show the connection between the forebears of the continent’s contemporary fashion scene and their present-day counterparts. “To showcase all fashions across such a vast region would be to attempt the impossible.” said Dr. Christine Checinska, the museum’s curator of African and African Diaspora Fashion, who aimed to instead present African fashions as a “self-defining art form that reveals the richness and diversity of African histories and cultures.”
