Writer Hilton Als will curate a show of portraits by the late Alice Neel, bringing her work out of obscurity more than three decades after her death. Born in 1900, Neel spent most of her adult life in Manhattan, moving between Spanish Harlem and the Upper West Side. Himself a New Yorker who first discovered her work in the 1970s, Als will highlight her depictions of African Americans, Latinos, and other people of color, many of them Neel’s acquaintances, friends, and family members who lived in the neighborhood.
