The first photographer to receive the biennial Hugo Boss Prize often centers Black men and women in her work, presenting them in precisely choreographed domestic settings that appear dream-like. Here, she debuts large-scale photographs—some embedded in holograms—that surround spectral renderings of toruses. Her installation draws on the concept of entropy, which refers to how the electrification of matter leads to a regeneration and harmonious order. That same impulse of renewal through creative energy is central to Lawson’s vision, in which her subjects are figured as unquestionably splendid, occupying a world that they command absolutely.
