In mid-January, when this exhibition opened, more than two million people worldwide had succumbed to the coronavirus. The Canadian artist felt overwhelmed with grief not only for pandemic victims, but for her father, who passed away in 2015. She channels her personal bereavement into two giant inflatable emojis—an urn and a wave, symbolizing a wave of mourning—that sit in the Downtown L.A. gallery’s courtyard. Despite the serious subject matter, feelings of exuberance prevail: the show’s title references lyrics from the “America’s Funniest Home Videos” theme song, commenting on the government’s mishandling of the pandemic.
