In the early days of the pandemic, Doug Aitken was cutting up old clothing to make hand-sewn tapestries that evoke quilting or domestic interiors. They star in his latest film, created in collaboration with L.A. Dance Project, in which performers are completely obscured in the fabric works and move through deserted locations across the city like tumbleweeds or apparitions. He’ll soon mount posters across the city that feature QR codes that link viewers to film excerpts—a way to “open up the body of work and share it with a wider audience,” he tells the Los Angeles Times. “The idea was that someone could be sitting at a bus stop, log on to the QR code, and suddenly their phone or tablet would activate into this experimental film.” The message is one of hope: beauty and resilience prevailing in times of devastation and stillness.
