Running along the gallery’s perimeter are new iterations of the Puerto Rican–born artist’s ongoing GRAFT series of architectural interventions, which incorporate the distinct visual motifs of decorative screens called “rejas” that are ever-present in mid-century domestic architecture on her native island. Adding emotional resonance to the series are 100 small photographs that document the drastic landscape changes the island experienced after Hurricane Maria. Soto also debuts a series of 2-D conceptual drawings inspired by Puerto Rico’s built environment, namely the design of lower- and middle-class homes that are recast as topographical spaces containing private histories.
