The Japanese art duo displays a kennel’s worth of virtual dogs inside steel cages—data animals that are permanently erased after ten minutes and replaced with an entirely new dog unless someone buys them. Once purchased, the dogs can then be “killed” and their vibrant, one-of-a-kind skin pattern converted into an NFT. The shop raises questions of ethics related to ownership and control. Even though the dogs act real and experience a “kind of life” by sitting and digging with their tongues hanging out, converting them into NFTs gives them eternal life. If these dogs could talk, what fears might they express?
