While the Studio Museum in Harlem undergoes construction on its new David Adjaye–designed building, the museum staff will present a series of satellite projects that emphasize its commitment to its neighborhood and community under its inHarlem initiative. One of these unveils the New York–based artist’s new series of portraits commemorating the lives of black women in the United States and the Caribbean who have made significant contributions to the arts and society in the 20th century. These works incorporate materials such as archival photographs, notes, letters, diaries, and manuscripts to animate the complex histories and ideas of figures such as Maya Angelou, Jean Blackwell, and Oprah Winfrey.
