Whether a vibrant pink-hued restaurant or a sprout-green tea room, vivid color defines everything that India Mahdavi touches. To the Iranian-born designer, colors “are the light and shade of all the Souths I originate from, which have become the expression of the nostalgia of a paradise lost and which animate in me the desire to imagine others.” So when Carwan Gallery founder Nicolas Bellavance-Lecompte implored that she render colorless editions of her signature furnishings (the Bishop series, the Albers and Diagonal tables), the ask came out of left field. Each piece is covered in Pentelic marble—a material chosen by sculptors and architects for its white color that, when hit by sunlight, reflects a golden sheen—and allows the lines and geometries often overshadowed by her use of color to shine through.
