Two large-scale installations at the MIT List Visual Arts Center mark Pedro Gómez-Egaña’s solo institutional debut in the United States. Virgo, which premiered at the Lyon Biennial in 2022, reconfigures domestic interiors with shifting modular walls and objects in motion, blurring the boundaries between physical structure and performance. Throughout the exhibition, trained gallery attendants, referred to as “orchestrators,” activate artworks by manually moving objects, triggering sounds, and guiding spatial interactions.
In the adjacent gallery, The Great Learning features a copper rod that slowly falls over 15 minutes, illustrating the delicate balance between gravity, friction, and environmental forces. Other works, including steel pendulums knocking against walls and sound-generating sculptures embedded in furniture, heighten the sensory experience. Through these layered interactions, Gómez-Egaña examines the tension between mechanical time and cosmic rhythms, inviting viewers to engage with the unseen forces shaping their surroundings.
