The prolific artist will present a new body of work, “The Minor Arts,” at the National Gallery. As the founder of the Rebuild Foundation, an urban-betterment nonprofit based in Chicago’s South Side, Gates frequently encounters blighted properties, and will often incorporate otherwise unsalvageable materials from these sites into his work. Look out for a sculpture crafted from the floorboards of a school gym, and another made from a single, massive piece of slate that once covered a church.
