An object-based commentary on material, labor, spiritual capital, and commodity, the Chicago artist’s first New York solo exhibition offers a multi-pronged approach into his personal narrative, the Black diaspora, and the canons of art history. He presents a series of tar paintings, assorted ceramic objects, installations, and sound-based works that recast the artwork as a vessel for recollected histories and shared experiences. “I always find myself returning to the vessel,” he says. “It’s part of the intellectual life force of my practice and it precedes all other forms of making.”
