In 2005, Jack Shainman Gallery staged a landmark show that placed Black Panther materials alongside newer works to highlight the movement’s goals and achievements. More than 15 years later, it’s questioning what progress has been made through the lens of seminal works by Coco Fusco, Arthur Jafa, and Radcliffe Bailey—all of whom participated in the 2005 show—alongside newer participants like Adam Pendleton whose works speak more closely to the present moment. Though the meaning of “progress” is open-ended, the show’s title points toward its fragile nature; the path toward progress may be complex and nuanced, but the artworks on view suggest there’s value and weight to be found at nearly every turn.
