Taking over the first floor of the Stony Island Arts Bank, a formerly abandoned bank on the South Side of Chicago restored by Theaster Gates’s Rebuild Foundation, is the first exhibition of furniture made by Tom Sachs in more than two decades. His furniture isn’t meant to look cozy or comfortable, relying instead on repurposed materials and the aviation construction technique of “lightening holes” in which excess material is removed to make the pieces both lighter and stronger.
