Known for his abstract paintings that take on architectural forms, Texas photorealism artist Tommy Fitzpatrick has spent a career constructing his works like buildings. Site, a solo exhibition on show at Qualia Contemporary Art, surveys 25 years of Fitzpatrick’s unique approach to painting. Whether he’s pouring gallons of polymers onto a canvas like cement or deploying industrial tools like concrete placers and trows, Fitzpatrick wields paint like a construction material. Also on display is a selection of new work in which he forges into a new realm: the digital world. Utilizing Computer Aided Design (CAD) software typically used by architects, the artist models his works virtually and translates them to the canvas. One takeaway sure to strike anyone who visits Site: while Fitzpatrick’s techniques change, his exploration of the built environment continues on.
