Reflecting on contemporary times defined by racial inequality, a global pandemic, and political division, the New Jersey artist’s latest body of paintings ruminate on today’s injustices and losses. Spann created fleshy, textured surfaces rendered in dominant colors of red, white, blue, and black, nodding to both political symbolism and the elements. Each canvas also features an inset oculus—a common element of church architecture—which evokes a tearful eye, weeping wound, or window pointing toward a place beyond.
