Abad’s first retrospective spans her 32-year career as an exuberant artist known for her trapuntos, quilted paintings created by stitching and stuffing canvases. Across more than 100 artworks, including textiles, works on paper, costumes, and ceramics, the show highlights her exploration of subjects from vibrant masks to intricate underwater scenes and abstract compositions. Abad’s art also holds a strong political and social responsibility, addressing the immigrant experience and giving visibility to oppressed peoples. Her travels and interactions with diverse communities influenced her practice, incorporating different cultural traditions and techniques into her work, celebrated here alongside the publication of her first major book.
