Each work in this group exhibition, curated by Amoako Boafo and Larry Ossei-Mensah, subverts preconceived notions of figurative painting and how the maker’s identity should be presented. From the distorted corporeal collages of Nigatu Tsehay to Zéh Palito’s vibrant depictions of our coexistence with nature, each artist conjures imaginary realms within their canvases that eschew societal constraints, especially imposed on immigrants and people of color. Mixed-media works that employ dynamic colors, textures, and forms plumb these topics further, sparking reflection on how to see each other and ourselves more truthfully.
